What You Should Know About Surrogate Pregnancy
For couples who are unable to have children of their own, there is an alternative to adoption and it is surrogate pregnancy. This is where another woman becomes pregnant with a baby which is given up to the couple (or individual) at birth. There have been cases of surrogates changing their mind and wanting to keep the baby they are carrying or have given birth to, and sometimes this can happen. One way to prevent this from occurring is by going the route of gestational surrogacy.
Gestational surrogacy is an option that allows the parents to contribute their genetic material to the baby. The father may donate his sperm and the mother may donate her eggs. If she is unable to ovulate there are egg donors that can be used. This also works the other way around, if the father cannot produce adequate sperm a donor can be chosen. The most important factor is that the none of the surrogate's genetic material is used.
The donor of the eggs must take medication for fertility that helps them make a number of eggs. At the most fortuitous time the eggs are taken from the donor and fertilized. The fertilization with sperm takes place using in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer, known as IVF and ET respectively. The embryo that is created through the fertilization is placed inside the surrogate mother in the hope of pregnancy. Once the surrogate becomes pregnant, the goal is to carry the baby full term for the parents.
The surrogate will receive fully paid medical care during the fertilization process, pregnancy and postpartum period. And, most surrogates receive a large payment for their services, especially if they are signed with an agency and carry a child for people they do not know. There are cases where close relatives or friends serve as unpaid surrogates for their loved ones who cannot have children.
Surrogate pregnancy can be a long and arduous process for both the surrogate and the parents who are awaiting the birth of their new arrival. Networking with other surrogates or parents going this route can help you feel more confident and meet people who are going through the same thing you are. While nine months can feel like such a long time for both the surrogate and the parents, it is worth every minute for people who want a baby of their own more than anything, and for the surrogate who wants a large payment and/or to help others.
