Selecting a Fertility Clinic

The decision to use a fertility clinic is not one to be entered into lightly. There is a lot involved, and costs are usually not covered under any type of insurance policy. Fertility clinics can be expensive and there can be both positives and negatives associated with conceiving a child at one of these clinics. You probably shouldn't even think about going to one of these centers without first talking to your gynecologist. If you are having problems getting pregnant a specialist can run tests on you and your partner.

This is to rule out any underlying medical causes that could be preventing pregnancy. And, to determine why pregnancy is not occurring. If you are told you are unable to have children naturally, you may then be referred to an infertility clinic. These facilities perform procedures like in-vitro fertilization, or IVF. This is a process that may not work the first time, and may result in multiple births. Understanding all the risks of the procedure is essential before making a decision to try IVF.

During this process, eggs are harvested from the mother and sperm is harvested from the father. The eggs are then fertilized in a Petri dish and implanted into the mother who is going to give birth. This may be the mother who donated the eggs, or it may be a surrogate mother. Infertility centers may handle more than IVF, they may also handle surrogate parenting and egg/sperm donors. Shopping around for the clinic that is best for your needs is crucial, unless there is a certain one your doctor strongly recommends. Using an infertility clinic is a decision that can change your whole life.

Whether or not you need to visit a fertility clinic is a medical issue. You may be able to get pregnant naturally and not need to go this route. Or, you may decide to adopt rather than do IVF treatments. If you do end up using a clinic, make sure it is a place where you feel comfortable and at ease. The doctors and nurses should be happy to answer all your questions and explain things to you. While a clinic may not be the best choice for everyone, for some parents it is the answer to their prayers because they are finally able to conceive.
