What Does a Fertility Center Have to Offer?
A fertility center, often called a clinic, is a medical facility where people go when they are unable to conceive a child naturally. Usually the first course of action is a thorough physical with a doctor or reproductive specialist to rule out any conditions or diseases that may be causing infertility. Sperm count may be checked in men and ovulation in women. If the doctor deems you infertile the next step may be to visit one of these clinics. Your doctor may refer you to a recommended facility.
There is no one size fits all approach to fertility clinics and what they can do for you. It all depends on your particular situation. For example, if you are a single woman who wants to become a mother on her own, you may visit a fertility clinic for the purposes of artificial insemination. Couples may go to one of these centers for IVF, or in vitro fertilization. This is a laboratory procedure in which eggs are fertilized in a Petri dish outside the body then implanted in the uterus. The eggs are enhanced with fertility drugs then removed through a minor surgical procedure.
From there, the eggs and sperm are incubated to watch for signs of fertilization. The fertilized eggs are fed through a catheter into the uterus, which is a procedure that is easier and less invasive than extracting them in the first place. After the fertilized eggs are inserted into the uterus, the potential birth mother is monitored carefully for signs of pregnancy. Hormone levels are checked and imaging tests are often done to confirm whether or not a woman is pregnant.
Some clinics offer surrogate parenting programs, which involve the use of a third party who will carry and give birth to the baby for the parents. This is a popular option with gay couples as well as with straight couples in which the female cannot carry a child. Gestational surrogacy is recommended, as it allows the parents to have genetic links to the baby while the birth mother has none. To find out more about what your local fertility center can offer you, visit their website or make an appointment for a consultation where you can ask questions and find out more information about your area of interest.
